Spring is here! I am so thankful for warm, sunny days and green grass, budding trees, the first wildflowers and herbs, and ‘all the things’ related to the season.
Spring cleaning is at the top of my to-do list. I don’t particularly relish the thought of all the work that awaits me, but I do anticipate having windows that sparkle and shine rather than add a hazy grime to the view. I do look forward to the annual decluttering of closets and cupboards, and the space and room to breathe that it creates.
I’ve recently discovered Brocante Home and am spending my evenings and afternoon quiet time devouring the Vintage Housekeeper books. Fun, inspirational reading, filled with practical housekeeping tips and tricks, not to mention those delightful puttery treats.

We all have those days, the ones when we just know we are going to need a little help to bring some peace and well-being to ourselves or our surroundings. Today was one such day. Full moon, rainy weather, and no small amount of external stress causing issues …
While waiting for my turn to shower I instinctively went to the still room and had an idea (the bowl of lavender I left out on the table was the first hint). I pulled a muslin bag out of the cabinet, stuck a piece of parchment paper inside, found a few pretty stamps and added Peace and some flowers and a dragonfly with blue ink. I stuffed the bag with lavender flowers and added 5 drops of Rose Geranium essential oil.
It’s now sitting on my desk bringing me peace and calm in the midst of chaos. I love aromatherapy and how something so simple can bring such health and happiness.
These shortbread cookies are my husband’s favorite, so I always make them at holiday time. They are super simple and only use 3 ingredients, which means I can usually make up a batch without the dreaded trip to the grocery store for missing ingredients!
SIMPLE SCOTCH SHORTBREAD COOKIES
1 cup butter
2 cups organic unbleached flour (or whatever flour you prefer)
1/2 cup Cane Juice Crystals (or granulated sugar of your choice)
Preheat oven to 300.
Mix ingredients with pastry blender until crumbly.
Work with hands until it makes a large lump.
Press flat into a 9×9 pan, about 1/2″ thick.
Prick with a fork thoroughly.
Bake for 50-60 minutes until set and very pale gold.
Cut while warm into 36 squares.
Notes: I usually bake and then cut; but you can make your little squares first and then bake on a cookie sheet, they come out a little “neater” looking that way. This simple recipe just begs to be dressed up a bit for Christmas! Perhaps with a topping of melted chocolate, or by adding some finely ground nuts and/or dried cranberries to the dough, or crushed candy canes sprinkled over a drizzle of glaze… a bit of dried lavender, lemony herbs and a bit of lemon glaze… so many choices!
